As
you can see, the greater the number of CDs ordered the lower the
unit cost of the CD.
Institutions
set their own CD sales price. This determines how quickly costs will
be recovered.
Some
common approaches include:
- CD
sales pay for all the costs. Using the example above (simple
concert with photos), if the CD was sold for $18, you would need to
sell 75 CDs to break even. With no photos, you'd need to sell 55 CDs.
If sold for $19/CD, you need to sell 66 (w/photos) and 48 (no photos).
- Institution pays only production costs.
Using the example above (w/photos), the institution pays $449 (the production
costs). This amount usually comes from the music budget, PTSA funding
or parent boosters, who are often quite willing to finance concerts
and photos. A CD sales price of $15 would require sales of 15 CDs to
pay for CD costs. A sales price of $18 would require only 6 CDs to cover
CD costs.
The
important point here is that the CD selling price directly determines
how many CDs need to be sold in order to finance the recording, CDs
and possibly photos. If more CDs are sold than the breakeven amount,
institutions can (and often do) make a profit from their concert
CDs. Email me if you have
questions or need a specific rate quote.
